While you’re setting your New Year’s resolutions (or not), why not gaze ahead at some new vehicles on the horizon for 2023? Here are eight models we’re tipping to make headlines this year.

First half of 2023

BYD

BYD ‘Dolphin’
All electric hatchback

The BYD name stands for Build Your Dreams – and it’s launching a revolutionary new electric hatchback in Australia. With a rumoured 1,000km range and considerably lower price tag than other EVs, this could indeed be many drivers’ dreams come true. Details are scarce but expect colourful exterior and interior accents, a suite of driver assist and digital tech, and a probable model name change for the Australian market. An announcement on when orders will open is expected in February.

Volkswagen

Volkswagen Amarok
Ute

The highly-anticipated 2nd generation Volkswagen Amarok will delight crowds when it arrives this year. Known for its premium interior and driving comfort, the new Amarok will not disappoint, with new model variants to suit a range of budgets. It’ll feature four new engine options including three diesel variants and one turbo-charged petrol, and claims a 3,500kg towing capacity. High-tech and loaded with safety features across the range (not to mention that superb cabin), you’ll be the envy of your mates.

MG

MG5
Sedan

A new rival in the sedan market, the MG5 is set to provide an excellent value option. While final specs are still to be confirmed, drivers can expect a 1.5L turbocharged engine, swoopy sporty exterior design, a large digital multimedia screen and digital dashboard, and iSmart app connectivity. With the MG brand on the rise in Australia, the MG5 should be one to watch.

Mercedes

Mercedes-Benz GLC
Luxury SUV

A global best-seller for Mercedes-Benz, the updated GLC is one of the brand’s most important launches for 2023. The new GLC is slightly larger, with more interior room and luggage space, a more premium interior and exterior, and either a mild or plug-in hybrid engine, the latter capable of up to 100km of all-electric driving. Standard equipment is to an exceptional level, with 4Matic, ambient lighting, wireless phone charging, a power tailgate and heated front seats. And it’s genuinely capable – the clever nav system is available with a towing planner that calculates a suitable route for your load.

Second half of 2023

Subaru

Subaru Crosstrek
Compact SUV

Human-centric design has been developed in collaboration with medical schools to create a small SUV that is in sync with the structure, movement and information processing of the human body, with supportive seating and an intuitive visual display. The Subaru Crosstrek is the next generation of the renowned Subaru XV platform and will offer symmetrical all-wheel-drive, fantastic tech and safety, a huge 11-inch touchscreen and a new hybrid engine option. An all-wheel-drive crossover SUV built to take you anywhere.

Mazda

Mazda CX-60
Medium SUV

Mazda’s most powerful car ever, the CX-60, is coming, and there are a lot of firsts involved. For starters, it’s a whole new platform for Mazda, and comes in a diesel and petrol engine option, both with a mild hybrid system, or Mazda’s first-ever plug-in hybrid variant which claims an astonishing combined-cycle fuel economy figure of just 2.1L/100km. The new CX-60 is a premium 5-seater with a lovely interior featuring plenty of extra touches, including Mazda’s largest-ever panoramic sunroof. In the higher spec models, the CX-60 uses facial recognition tech to automatically adjust the SUV’s seating position, mirrors, and other personalised settings.

Ford

Ford Everest Sport RWD
Large SUV

The popular Ford Everest line-up will grow in 2023 with the addition of the Sport 4x2 Rear-Wheel Drive option. Additions include sporty black exterior accents, a Hands-free Power Tailgate and more. With 5-star ANCAP safety, 3,500kg towing and 7-seat versatility, the Everest is a strong family favourite. The new RWD Sport presents a stylish option for families who don’t need 4x4 capability – but it’s still capable of towing the boat.

Ford

Ford F-150
Pick-up truck

It’s big, it’s tough, and it’s coming to Australia! Lauded as America’s favourite pick-up truck, the Ford F-150 is arriving on local shores in mid-2023. With an epic 4,500kg towing capacity, plus a powerful V6 engine producing tornado-inducing power and torque, you’ll be able to tow and carry just about anything, for work or play. The Ford F-150 is a premium-grade muscle, designed and refined with tech to help you work smarter and harder. (And don’t worry – it will be a right-hand drive.)

Beyond 2023

EcoWheel

Tesla Roadster
Sports EV

You might just catch the fastest car in the world when it arrives in Australia – but only if you’re lucky. The new Tesla Roadster claims to achieve a blistering 2.1 seconds 0-100km/h time, with a top speed of over 400km/h and an incredible 1,000km range. Tesla calls the Roadster a supercar, and with 10,000Nm of wheel torque and record-breaking performance figures, it certainly fits the bill. Aerodynamic, sporty, and luxurious, the Roadster seats four and has a lightweight, removable glass roof to provide convertible freedom when you want it. Wow.
