Bryce’s battle of the best beaches

Which sandy spot will top his list?

Dreaming of holidays?

Bryce is back and has us feeling wishful as he explores some of the most picturesque beaches across the country.

It has been a tough process (so many to pick from), but Bryce gives us his top 5 best beaches in Australia.

Whether your style is surfing, fishing, driving on the dunes, reading, relaxing, sandcastle-making with the kids or a quick dip to cool off, there’s something for you.

We wonder if your favourite sandy destination makes the list?

#5 – Goolwa, SA

Goolwa
Goolwa

The historic meeting point of the Murray River and the Indian Ocean. Snow-white sandy beaches and just an hour south of Adelaide.

It makes Bryce’s list as:
“It had amazing sunsets, and we got to enjoy some beach 4WDing. A very relaxing place.”

Bryce recommends to always plan and be prepared before driving on the beach.

Top beach driving tips

Check the weather
It is important to know the conditions as well as checking low and high tide times
It’s all about the tyres
Lower your tyre pressure when approaching the sand and do not forget to re-inflate once leaving
Have the right gear
Shovels, traction mats, tyre pressure gauge, air pump, recovery equipment such as tow traps and rope (in case you get stuck), spare tires, first aid kit, flashlight and water
Follow road rules
Even on the sand, do not forget to drive at a safe speed, watch out for other vehicles and pedestrians, stay to the left and still use your indicator

#4 – Jan Juc Beach, VIC

Jan Juc Beach

A must stop location along the Great Ocean Road. 100kms south west of Melbourne and 26 kms south of Geelong.

It makes Bryce’s list as:
“Whether you are surfing, swimming or walking along the sand, this beach offers some spectacular scenery of cliffs and rock formations that have been carved from the winds of the Southern Ocean and the Bass Strait.”

#3 – Crescent Head, NSW

Crescent Head
Crescent Head

Bryce riding the waves

Although it rests on the edge on an easy-going town, the waves are less relaxed at what is one of the most famous surfing spots in the country. If golf is more your style, there’s a great golf course right on the headland.

Bryce did not waste any time carving up the waves, and his surfing sidekick Bronson was certainly impressed with his performance.

It makes Bryce’s list as:
“It’s a natural-footer’s dream. On a good day you can travel 400 metres down the line then run around and do it all again.
Don’t forget to check out Point Plomer and take the 4WD onto Queens Beach. There are plenty of great camping spots on offer.”

#2 – Main Beach, North Stradbroke Island, QLD

North Stradbroke Island
North Stradbroke Island

Striking Straddie sunrises

North Stradbroke Island, fondly named as ‘Straddie’, is a sub-tropical island as well as the world’s 2nd largest sand island, located 30 km southeast of Brisbane.

It boasts endless summer adventures as well as winters where you can watch whales, making it a popular destination for a holiday or even a day trip.

Why it makes Bryce’s list:
A well-earned place on the list as Bryce found it to be,
“Such a versatile place. The best sunrises! You can take the 4WD up to the beach, as well as having great waves to surf. We also loved the beautiful walk from South Gorge Beach to North Gorge, with multiple little swimming coves to enjoy when it is calm.”

And the WINNER IS…

#1 – Wharton Beach, WA

Wharton Beach

Bryce and Liz living their dream - surrounded by dolphins

Cape Le Grand

Cape Le Grand

Located in the Duke of Orleans Bay, and within Cape Le Grand National Park, there is no question as to why this made the top of Bryce’s list. Known for its peaceful and tranquil vibes with sand so fine it squeaks!

Bryce’s ultimate favourite as:
“Sharing my surname with the beach, it was a location that I had to visit. It has some of the clearest water I have ever seen! Liz and I jumped on our boards and were delighted to be joined by over 40 dolphins – a dream of ours. We were lucky enough to meet the guy who had the drone and he shared this incredible image with us. We ended up spending the afternoon with him, hearing some incredible stories about his life living in the area.”

All adventures need a sidekick, especially that of the four-legged kind. Next month, we get up close and paw-sonal with Bronson!
